BARRE, VT Championship point battles are close across the board at Barres Thunder Road, with four stock car racing divisions clashing to decide their title winners in the final half of the season. Entering Thursdays NAPA Auto Parts/Make-A-Wish Trophy Dash, three of the four divisional point leaders have spreads of just 20 points or less over their closest competitors. Jamie Hurricane Fisher of Shelburne is tracking down his second King of the Road crown in the American- Canadian Tour Late Model division, but has Williamstowns Cris Michaud and Dave Pembroke of Montpelier at his heels. Fisher and his S.D. Ireland Chevrolet team lead three-time track champion Michaud by only 16 points, with Pembroke just a single marker behind him. Weve been working on the car all week trying to stay on top of our game, said Fisher. Ive got two of the best chasing me down. Anything could happen, Fisher said. We had the point lead in 2003 and then lost it late in the year, but then we came back again and won the title. Including the NAPA/Make-A-Wish event on Thursday, the Late Models have just four championship races left. The regular season wraps up for the division on Tuesday, August 28. Hometown NAPA Tiger Sportsman racer Nick Sweet enjoys the largest point lead in Thunder Roads four divisions, as he holds a 99-point edge over Northfields Matt White. With six events remaining and as many as 45 Sportsman competitors attempting to qualify for 26 starting positions every week, though, the race is potentially wide open. Behind Sweet, just 51 points separate the balance of the top ten drivers. Allen Lumber Street Stock rookie Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg has put together a stellar four-win season, and leads veteran Barre racer Lloyd Blakely with six events left on the schedule. On the strength of seven top- five finishes, Blakely has held teenager Therrien to a 10-point cushion. Hardwicks Bunker Hodgdon leads Wolcott driver Jamie Davis in the Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior class by a narrow 20 points. Both drivers have finished in the top-five a division-leading six times to date. All four divisions will be in action on Thursday night as Thunder Roads 48th season of exciting stock car racing continues with the NAPA Auto Parts/Make-A-Wish event. Also on the program are the annual Run What You Brung spectator races. Qualifying rounds for the Street Stock and Warrior divisions begin at 6:30pm. General admission is only $9 for adults, $3 for children, and just $18 for a family of four. Gates open at 4:30pm.
