2007 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour: A Showcase of Short Track Racing
* Bookends: Caraway Speedway to Host Season Opener March 24 and Season Finale Oct. 6
* Inaugural Event at Nashville’s Music City Motorplex Set for April 1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 14, 2006) – An all-star lineup of tracks awaits the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour in 2007.

It begins March 24 at Caraway Speedway, in Asheboro, N.C., and continues at many of the most popular and historic short tracks in the Southeastern U.S. That lineup includes: Music City Motorplex, in Nashville, Greenville-Pickens Speedway, in Greenville, S.C., Bowman Gray Stadium, in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Racing heritage runs deep at these tracks, which have entertained families for generations and launched the careers of countless NASCAR stars.

After the season-opener at Caraway, the Whelen Southern Modified Tour heads to Music City Motorplex, at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville, for the first time on Sun., April 1. Music City is well-known as the home track for such notable NASCAR names as Darrell Waltrip, Sterling Marlin, Bobby Hamilton and Jeff Green, among others.

“The Whelen Southern Modified Tour continues to provide a great racing experience for fans and drivers alike,” said NASCAR Managing Director of Racing Operations George Silbermann. “The 2007 schedule features a strong lineup of racing venues for our fans while creating a challenging and competitive race for the championship.”

Greenville-Pickens Speedway, another historic NASCAR venue with a racing history that spans six decades, is the next stop on the schedule. The Whelen Southern Modified Tour will visit this half-mile speedway, located at the Upper State (S.C.) Fairgrounds, on Sat., April 7.

Caraway will host five more events, on April 14, July 6, Sept. 8, Sept. 22 and the season finale Oct. 6. Bowman Gray Stadium, NASCAR’s longest-running track, will host the Whelen Southern Modified Tour on Sat., Aug. 4.

On Labor Day weekend, Whelen Southern Modified Tour followers will have two chances to catch the Tour in action. Martinsville Speedway, which has held Modified racing since 1947, hosts the Whelen Southern Modified Tour in a combination race with the Northeastern-based NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, on Sat., Sept. 1. On Mon., Sept. 3, the Labor Day weekend schedule continues at Ace Speedway, in Altamahaw, N.C.

“At Whelen, our philosophy is to support grassroots racing and we’re thrilled to continue our involvement with the Whelen Southern Modified Tour,” said Phil Kurze, vice president of motorsports for Connecticut-based Whelen Engineering. “It has been a great Tour since the beginning and the teams, tracks and drivers have given tremendous support. We’re proud to do our part and look forward to a great 2007 season”

The Tour returns to Southern National Raceway Park, in Kenly, N.C., on Sat., Sept. 15, and the schedule concludes with the final two races at Caraway.
