Former M&M Beverage Enduro Champion Paul Wells Files First Entry
For Immediate Release TR-062007-1
WATERBURY, VT Paul Wells of Enosburg has filed the first entry for The Peoples Race, the 23rd annual M&M Beverage Enduro 200 on Sunday, July 29 at Barres Thunder Road. The Enduro is a 200-lap, no-holds-barred event where over 100 amateur drivers race virtually street-legal automobiles for a top prize of $2,000. Wells won the race in 1996, and will try to duplicate the feat in a car considerably different than his first winning mount. The 48 year-old will drive a compact 1993 Dodge Colt, much smaller than the full-sized Chevrolet Monte Carlo he drove to the win over a decade ago. My crew chief, Steve Morriseau, talked me out of retirement, said Wells with a chuckle. We dont care whether it goes well or not, we just want to have fun, which is really what its all about. At first, I wasnt sure about that little Dodge Colt weve got, but a lot of the recent winners have been smaller cars. I guess it could do it. In addition to his previous victory, history is on Wells side: Tad Kingsbury drove a Chevrolet Celebrity sedan to the victory last year, while Doug Turner won in 2005 in a mid-1990s Pontiac Grand Prix. Current NAPA Tiger Sportsman driver Matt White started his racing career with a win in the 2004 M&M Beverage Enduro, driving a tiny Dodge Shadow that he later converted into a Power Shift Junkyard Warrior machine. All three cars were front- wheel drive, and are considered to be on the small side in an Enduro field. Wells says that no matter what type of car an Enduro driver is racing, all you really need is luck. Winning the Enduro is all luck, said Wells. Maybe if youre still in the race with a shot to win in the last 25 laps you need some strategy, but luck is the biggest part of it. I had a big piece of junk with an automatic transmission in 1996, this year Ive got a little piece of junk and Im trying it again. WATERBURY, VT Entries for The Peoples Race the 23rd Annual M&M Beverage Enduro 200 auto race at Barres Thunder Road are pouring into the main office in Waterbury. The Enduro, which will run on Sunday, July 29, is a 200-lap survival race with over 100 amateur drivers piloting virtually street-legal automobiles. Cars will line up three abreast in a standing start as the cheering fans count down to begin the race. The race will only be stopped in emergency situations or to clear expired cars from the track. The first driver to finish 200 laps will earn a cool $2,000. Mike Chapin of Chelsea will race in his first M&M Beverage Enduro 200 in over ten years. Chapin and more than 100 of his closest friends will experience spinouts, crashes, blown tires, slick track conditions, and obstacles of all kinds during the 200-lap race. Im after the $2,000, isnt everybody? he said with a laugh. I finished 25th in a Cadillac the last time I raced, and all I really want to do is finish again. Its a lot of fun, thats what its about. Chapin will steer a front wheel drive Oldsmobile 88 Royale in this years Enduro. Drivers from eight Vermont counties and two New Hampshire counties have filed official entries, with many more expected in the coming days and weeks. Included on the roster are Johnson resident David Lamell, Scott Carr of Charlestown, NH, and veteran Enduro racer Dipstick Don Tofani of Plainfield. Richmonds Corey Ann Hartwell is the first female competitor entered. M&M Beverage will also present special events for the Allen Lumber Street Stock and Power Shift Junkyard Warrior divisions that regularly compete at Thunder Roads Thursday night events. David Allen of North Troy won the Street Stock special last season, while Waitsfields Kevin Streeter took the Junkyard Warrior feature. The M&M Beverage Enduro 200, plus feature events for the Allen Lumber Street Stocks and Power Shift Junkyard Warriors, is set to shake, rattle, and maybe even roll on Sunday, July 29. General admission for The Peoples Race is $9 for adults, $3 for children (6-12), and just $18 for a family of four. Post time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
