Now with all that out of the way.....Let's make some laps!
BARRE, VT Rookie Late Model stock car driver Chip Grenier of Northfield broke into Thunder Roads victory lane in a big way on Thursday night, taking a rare Triple Crown in the Charter Communications race event. Grenier won his qualifying heat, the bonus-points semi-feature, and the 50-lap Charter Communications main event for the sweep. Grenier took the lead from polesitter Brooks Clark on the opening lap of the feature race, then cruised mostly uncontested to his first career win. The only competition for the rookie came during the races six restarts when the field was bunched closely together. This win is dedicated to the effort that my whole team puts in on this car, said Grenier in the winners circle. My father, Alain, is an Iraq veteran, and when he should have been celebrating on the fourth of July yesterday, he was side-by-side with me working on this race car until 11:00 pm. Its a great feeling to win for this team. Washington County Senator Phil Scott of Middlesex finished second for his best result of the 2007 season. Dennis Demers of Shelburne edged Essex Junction driver Dave Whitcomb by inches at the finish for third place. Kip Stockwell of Braintree recovered from an early crash to finish fifth. Jamie Fisher, Dave Pembroke, Clark, Dwayne Lanphear, and Cris Michaud rounded out the unofficial top ten in order. Matt White made it two wins on the night for Northfield, taking the 35-lap NAPA Tiger Sportsman feature. White, driving a borrowed car from Gregg Lyman, took the lead on lap 14 and sailed to his first win of the year. Kris Grout of Waterbury was the runner-up ahead of Barres David Finck. Pete Ainsworth of Middlesex and rookie Kyle Tatro of Hyde Park completed the unofficial top five finishers. Tommy Thunder Smith of Williamstown took his 13th career Allen Lumber Street Stock victory, moving into second place on the all-time winners list. Rookie Bobby Therrien of Hinesburg passed Topsham veteran Tim Campbell with a handful of laps remaining for the runner-up position. Barres Lloyd Blakely and Wolcott driver Maynard Bartlett, Sr. rounded out the unofficial top five. Leonard Sanborn of Graniteville drove a convertible Dodge Shadow to the win in the 15-lap Power Shift Junkyard Warrior feature for his first career win. Jared Henry of Barre finished second ahead of point leader Bunker Hodgdon of Hardwick. Thunder Roads 48th season of exciting stock car racing continues next Thursday (July 12) as CARQUEST Auto Parts presents the 25th Vermont Governors Cup Late Model 100, at an early start time of 6:00pm.
