Michaud, Lowrey, Fecteau Share Common Mid-Season Championship Goal
For Immediate Release TR-072307-1
BARRE, VT Three Vermont stock car drivers will be representing their race teams, their home counties, and their impressive resumes at the 48th Times Argus Mid-Season Championships at Barres Thunder Road this Thursday. Williamstowns Cris Michaud, a three-time King of the Road, will carry the Central Vermont banner for Orange County, Rich Lowrey of Charlotte will represent the Northwest for Chittenden County, and former Thunder Road Late Model Champion Pete Fecteau of Morrisville will carry Lamoille County and Northern Vermont. While the three veteran racers hail from different regions of the state, each has some things in common with the others: A checkered past in the Mid-Season Championship, and a desire to build upon their victory totals in the double-points event. Together, the trio has copped the last six editions of the event two apiece with Fecteau gathering a third win in 1997, the year of his King of the Road title bid. My crew and I are really looking forward to Thursdays race, said Michaud, the Times Argus Mid-Season Championship winner in 2002 and 2004. With double points on the line were in a good position to gain on (point leader) Dave Pembroke. Plus, the annual autograph session is a great time. The fans at Thunder Road are great, and I know the drivers in all four divisions love the autograph session. Michaud will pilot the Merchants Bank/Burrell Roofing Ford for his Kendell Legendre-led team on Thursday. Like Michaud, Lowrey will look to join an elite group of three-time winners in the event. Lowrey scored his first career win at the Times Argus Mid-Season Championship in 2001, and earned a second win in the event in 2005. Were all pretty excited, said Lowrey, driver of the océ/Blockbuster Chevrolet. Mid-Season has been good to us, and it was really special to get our first win in that race a few years back. This team has been through some tough races and bad wrecks this year, and a win at Mid-Season would be a great way to get back on track. Should either Lowrey or Michaud take their third Times Argus Mid-Season Championship victory, the winner would enter a five-way tie with Fecteau and Thunder Road legends Bobby Dragon, Chuck Beede, and Jim Cilley atop the all-time winners list in the event. The double points at Mid-Season can make you or break you, said Fecteau, who has had a relatively sub- par season thus far. In addition to his 1997 triumph, Fecteau also won in 2003 and 2006. His victory in the main event last season was part of a rare Triple Crown sweep in which he also won his qualifying heat and the bonus- point semi-feature. The double-point score enabled Fecteau and his Riverview Garage Pontiac to leap from 13th in standings to fifth by the end of the night. Weve been struggling, and we could turn it around with a win, he said. We have before. The Times Argus Mid-Season Championship event is scheduled for Thursday, July 26 with a post time of 7:00pm. Preliminary events begin at 6:30pm. Double points will also be up for grabs in the NAPA Tiger Sportsman, Allen Lumber Street Stock, and Power Shift Junkyard Warrior divisions. The annual Thunder Road Times Argus driver autograph session will be held during intermission. Regular general admission prices remain in effect at only $9 for adults, $3 for children, and just $18 for a family of four. Rookies Shine in Mid-Season Championship Events at Thunder Road
For Immediate Release TR-072607-1
BARRE, VT Northfield stock car racer Chip Grenier became just the second rookie competitor in 48 years to win the Times Argus Mid-Season Championship at Barres Thunder Road. Greniers 50-lap double- points score was his second feature win of the season. This night always bit us when we raced in the Tiger Sportsman division, said Grenier in victory lane. So many times we came into the double-points race in contention for the championship and left outside the Top 10. This year we came in inside the Top 10 and capitalized with a win. Grenier was quick to credit his spotter, Keith Williams, in keeping his focus. I kept asking Keith, Is Jamie (Fisher) back there? Grenier explained. Keith just said No names, no numbers, were here to do a job and win the race. It was what I needed to win. Eric Williams of Hyde Park crossed the finish line in second place after a spirited battle with Fisher, but was penalized one lap for running an unapproved tire. The tire on Williams car was purchased at an event at Oxford Plains (ME) Speedway one week ago. While the tire was unaltered, it was not approved for competition at the Times Argus Mid-Season Championship. Williams was officially moved to 20th position, the first car off the lead lap. Fisher inherited the runner-up position. Phil Scott of Middlesex, Cris Michaud of Williamstown, Joey Becker of Jeffersonville rounded out the top five finishers. Dennis Demers, Trampas Demers, Dave Pembroke, Rich Lowrey, and Jerry Lesage completed the top ten in order. Grenier was not the only freshman driver tasting success at the Times Argus Mid-Season Championship event. Craftsbury rookie Joel Hodgdon continued the winning trend in the NAPA Tiger Sportsman division, earning his first career win over fellow first-year driver Eric Badore of Milton. Hodgdon remained relatively unchallenged after taking the early lead in the 35-lap feature, but Badore came out on top after a fierce battle with veteran Mark Barnier of Essex Junction. Tommy Therrien of Hinesburg and Craig Bushey of Cambridge rounded out the unofficial top five finishers. Veteran racer Dancin Dave Allen of North Troy earned his 12th career Allen Lumber Street Stock win after passing early leader Tiffany Tucker with just a handful of laps remaining in the 25-lap Times Argus Mid-Season Championship event. Tucker, 17, held off a furious charge from a host of competitors before giving way to Allen late in the going. Williamstown rookie Mike Ziter and Lloyd Blakely of Barre snuck in front of Tucker to finish second and third, respectively. Tucker held off Morrisvilles Billy Hennequin for fourth place. Jeff Martin, Jr. of Moretown was the winner of the 15-lap Power Shift Junkyard Warrior feature. Hometown driver Scott Weston was the runner-up ahead of Montpeliers James Dopp. Mike Ducey of Williamstown and Travis Payette of Barre rounded out the top five. Thunder Roads 48th season of exciting stock car racing continues on Sunday, July 29 with the M&M Beverage Enduro 200, a survival-of-the fittest amateur race paying $2,000 to the winner. Special events for the Allen Lumber Street Stocks and Power Shift Junkyard Warriors are also on the card. Post time is scheduled for 6:30pm. General admission is $9 for adults, $3 for kids, and only $18 for a family of four. For more information, call (802) 244-6963 or visit www.thunderroadspeedbowl.com.
