Championship to Be decided Saturday At Caraway Speedway

WSMT Press Releases
Championship to be Decided Saturday at Caraway
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 2, 2007) After a six-month stretch of competition that has included close to 2,000 laps of intense racing action, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship will be decided this Saturday night in the Southern Modified Tour 150 at Caraway Speedway.

There are only two Whelen Southern Modified Tour drivers L.W. Miller and Tim Brown that have a mathematical chance of winning the championship at the Asheboro, N.C., short track.

Regardless of the outcome, a new Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion will be crowned with two-time and defending series champion Junior Miller, currently fourth in the standings, on the outside looking in.

On the surface, it would appear that L.W. Miller is sitting pretty as the 34 year-old Mooresville, N.C. driver, holds a 45-point lead over Brown. In order to clinch his first Whelen Southern Modified Tour title, Miller needs to finish ninth or better on Saturday night.

Were in a pretty good position heading into Saturday, but we still have to have everything go our way, Miller said. Im in a pretty good position as far as the championship goes, but well have to see how everything plays out. I am a little nervous but we, as a team, have done everything we can do to be in this position. If everything goes like we want it to, well leave Caraway as the Whelen Southern Modified Tour champions.

If we have bad luck and something goes wrong, we will know that we were a championship caliber team all season. Im just worried about the things that I cant control. I just want to focus on winning this race and letting the points fall where they may.

Despite having last weekend off for some much needed rest, Miller and his No. 36 Baker Motorsports team are ready to return to action and try to seal their title bid.

Im ready to get back to racing, Miller said. It was nice to have last weekend off, which gave everybody a chance to get some rest and regroup. We actually tested at Caraway last week and that went really well. I know that my goal heading into this Saturday night at Caraway is to be careful. If I come out of there in one piece, well probably win the championship.

Having said that, Im also a competitor and I dont want to just ride around. I want to win the race.

Miller is quick to give praise to Browns consistency over the course of the 2007 Whelen Southern Modified Tour season.

Tim and his team have had a great year, Miller said. If we have problems at Caraway those guys will be in a position to beat us for the championship. Tim just has to be focused on winning the race and hope for me to have some bad luck. Those guys have been in this position before so they know what theyre doing.
